If you're experiencing display, audio, or other hardware-related issues on your Dell PC, outdated drivers may be the cause. Before requesting a hardware replacement, please follow the steps below to check for and install the latest driver updates using Dell Command Update.
This process typically takes 10–15 minutes, but can occasionally take up to 45 minutes, so please plan accordingly.
Step 1: Install Dell Command Update
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for "Software Center" and open it.
- On the Applications tab, locate Dell Command Update and click into it.
- Click Install.
- If you see a "Failed" or "Retry" prompt, click it again — the installation should complete on the retry.
Step 2: Launch Dell Command Update
- Open the Start menu again.
- Search for "Dell Command Update" and launch the application.
You should see a welcome screen like this:
Step 3: Check for Updates
Click the CHECK button in the top-right area of the app. Dell Command Update will scan your system for the latest BIOS, driver, and firmware updates.
Before you start:
- If you're on a laptop, make sure it's plugged in.
- Be prepared for your machine to be offline for up to 45 minutes during installation (often closer to 10–15 minutes).
Step 4: Review and Install Updates
Once the scan completes, you'll see a list of available updates similar to this:
- Review the update categories (Critical, Recommended, etc.) — these are typically pre-selected.
- Restart option: If you can step away from your PC while updates install, check "Automatically restart system (when required)." If you plan to keep using the machine during the download, leave this unchecked and restart manually once installation finishes.
- Click INSTALL to begin.
⚠️ Note: If your power adapter isn't connected, some updates may be blocked from installing. Make sure your laptop is plugged in before clicking Install.
⚠️ Heads up: You may notice temporary audio or visual glitches while display or audio drivers are updating. We recommend avoiding important meetings or calls during this process.
